Mid Face Lift (Cheek Lift)
Over time, gravity pulls down on the facial tissues and, in particular, the cheeks. As the cheeks descend, they may begin to appear flat and contribute to the development ofjowls. This can make you appear old, tired, drawn or sad. The mid face lift, also known as a cheek lift, is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure which lifts sagging facial cheek tissues to improve the prominence of the cheeks and cheekbones. This surgery can restore fullness to the cheeks and reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds for a more youthful, rested appearance.
Candidates for the Mid Face Lift
The mid face lift, which is different than a traditional facelift, is often appropriate for younger individuals with early signs of aging. Patients are generally looking to improve droopiness and puffiness in the cheeks or beneath the eyes or hollowing in the cheeks. For those who are not yet ready for a full facelift, this is an excellent, less invasive option which can provide a very natural, often subtle result. As with all surgeries, patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations for improvement. It’s important to understand that the mid face lift is not a replacement for a full facelift. Some candidates may be better candidates for a traditional full facelift if they are looking to address significant excess or sagging skin on the outer face, neck and jawline.
The Mid Face Lift Surgery
The mid face lift is often performed with either general anesthesia or with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. Surgery typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. There are a variety of techniques which may be used to perform the mid facelift. Incisions may be located within the hairline above the ears, inside or along the lower eyelid, or inside of the mouth. Through this incision, the tissue and skin are elevated and the cheek pad lifted. This restores fullness to the cheek and a more youthful position.
Recovering from the Mid Face Lift
As with any surgery, bruising and swelling may occur after the mid face lift, both in the mid face area and around the eyes. These side effects typically fade within seven to ten days. Discomfort can be managed with pain medication. The smile may appear unnatural at first due to over-correction of the cheek pad, but this settles into a more natural position with time. Final results are usually seen after two to four months. Most patients feel well enough to return to work and other activities after about two weeks.
