Restylane is an FDA-approved injectable filler made of a transparent hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance which naturally exists in the human body and helps to nourish and hydrate the skin. Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. Restylane can restore the lost hyaluronic acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance.Restylane is commonly used to smooth facial lines and wrinkles, sculpt the lips, and enhance the facial features. It is particularly effective in treating the nasolabial folds which are the lines which extend from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Restylane works by temporarily adding volume.
Candidates for Restylane
Candidates for treatment with Restylane are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improvement. Patients must understand that improvement with Restylane is temporary and that repeat injections are needed to maintain the results. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not be treated with Restylane.
The Restylane Procedure
Restylane injections are performed in the office setting and take anywhere from a 5-15 minutes to complete. A local anesthesia or numbing cream may be used for the patient’s comfort. Using a very fine needle, the Restylane is injected beneath the skin in small amounts. Several tiny injections may be made.
Restylane Recovery & Results
The results of Restylane are fully evident within one week and last about six to nine months. Side effects are rare but may include bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection site. Swelling may last for several days; however, normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. Patients will be advised to stay out of the sun for a period of time.
