The fractional CO2 laser offers a superior skin resurfacing treatment. Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, the fractional laser treats fractions of the skin, creating thousands of microscopic perforations while leaving the surrounding skin untouched. This allows for the same dramatic results of traditional laser resurfacing but with far less discomfort and downtime. Fractional laser resurfacing is an excellent treatment for aging and sun damaged skin, including wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, acne scars and post-traumatic scarring.
Candidates for Laser Resurfacing
Candidates for fractional laser resurfacing are typically looking to improve aging or sun damaged skin with minimal downtime. Patients should be in good health with realistic expectations. A wide range of skin conditions can be treated and both men and women of all skin colors can be treated.
The Laser Resurfacing Procedure
The fractional laser resurfacing procedure typically takes no more than an hour to complete. Discomfort is minimal and anesthesia is not needed. During the procedure, the laser hand piece is passed over the skin, emitting laser energy which is absorbed by the skin. The laser creates areas of affected tissue that triggers the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue for a more youthful looking glow.
Recovery & Results
There is approximately 5-7 days of recovery following fractional laser resurfacing. Two to three days of crusting initially followed by flushing or redness similar to a sunburn may result, as well as some minor swelling. Redness typically fades within a week. Makeup can often be applied five to seven days post treatment. Some patients find that they can return to quiet work or social activities the next day while others choose to recover for a week. Sun exposure should be avoided during the healing process. While a single treatment often produces dramatic results, many patients undergo a series of several treatments spaced at four-week intervals for optimal results. Results are both immediate and progressive as new collagen forms, creating healthier, more youthful looking skin wither fewer wrinkles and imperfections.
